The Wedding Band On a Budget and In a Box

By Beth Jacobson

When digital music players like the ipod first came on the scene, there were many controversies, as music industry executives all over were fearing that without people purchasing hard copies of music, listeners would be able to get music for free, leaving the profits of an age old business low. A few years later, it's certainly obvious that the business of music hasn't broken under the weight of digital music players (iPod), which holds a 90% share of the music player market. Now, it seems though, that another area of the music industry is in fear of its life.

You may have heard the term iPod wedding being bandied about, but rest assured that humanity has not yet lost all respect for the sacred bonds of marriage and begun to indulge in formalized commitments to their electronic gadgets. The term, in fact, refers to the new, money saving trend of ditching the wedding singer or DJ in favor of another musical mediator. Newly wed couples are now celebrating their nuptials to the sounds that emanate from their iPods.

With the cost of weddings rising every year, who can blame them?. Having a live band at your wedding may cost upwards of $1000, and hiring a DJ can cost a price tag of about $600. For many couples, it's tough to find ways to cut corners of a wedding's expenses what with the cost of the ring and gown. It certainly starts to make a lot of sense to use music that you already have, and utilize the ipod's simple setup and huge capacity for songs.

There is plenty of other advantages to using an ipod in lieu of a DJ. You can forget about worrying about awkwardness or bad tastes of a band or DJ and have complete control over the music you want to hear. Also, if you don't have an ipod already, you can get one for about have the cost of a DJ and be able to have it after the wedding for personal use. A wedding iPod can be a nice little gift for the couple to give themselves, allowing them to evoke wonderful memories of a happy day every time they use it.

An iPod is an ideal way to save money at any big occasion, and allows you to share the music you love with the people you care about. But while the iPod is a powerful tool, DJs and bands shouldn't throw in the hat just yet the iPod didn't kill the music industry and with the continuing popularity of live music at weddings, its unlike to ruin their business either.
