There are simple steps to be followed in order to convert to Judaism. The intention is to make sure that the choice is personal and informed by understanding of the Jewish faith and way of life. It is not an easy and straightforward process. There are beliefs, traditions and norms to learn. This takes time as the rabbi scrutinizes you to be sure that you are ready for conversion.

You will begin by researching into the customs, history and laws of the Jews. You will know the kind of life you are signing into and why you want to take that step. It is important to note that the decision you make will affect every part of your life. You are expected to teach the same belief to your children.

There are 613 commandments for you to learn and 13 other principles. They form the foundation of any formation. Your family should have knowledge of the step you are about to take. Informing them allows them to examine your desires and intentions. They must find comfort in your reasons to ensure harmony is maintained.

If the reason for conversion is marriage, you should be open to your spouse. You have a chance to discuss the denomination you are going to join. Many rabbis do not allow you to take the classes for the sake of it. He might tell you that Im a rabbi, but will not take you through classes for that simple reason.

Sincerity of heart and genuine desire are demanded from anyone who wants to convert to Judaism. It is a spiritual transformation and must not be informed by any other desire. There are different denominations like Orthodox, Reform and Conservatives which you may join. Their levels of devotion distinguish them.

Your decision should be communicated to the rabbi who has a responsibility of assessing your conviction. This is done by dissuading your from conversion. Your desire should see you resist such a move vehemently and defend your position. Successful completion of this process opens doors for you to move to the next stage.

Those who wish to convert to Judaism have to attend classes for almost a year. Some organizations offer night classes. You will be watched to ensure that you adhere to the Jewish way of life. The subjects covered in class revolve around culture, tradition and beliefs of the Jews. Instructions are mostly offered in Hebrew.

Every learner is required to take a test after completing classes. You will sit in a court of three authorities called Beit Din to test how well you can adhere to Halacha. This is a mandatory procedure during conversion. Those who qualify are taken through the ritual bath ceremony. It involves full emersion in Mikveh. All males must have been circumcised. Shedding a little blood will complete the ritual.

It is not automatic for children to convert to Judaism because their parents have converted. Some orders are very strict and do not even permit children conceived before start of classes to be converted. These children are required to attend their classes at the age of thirteen. Those born later are automatically admitted.
