Killings Of Unarmed African Americans

By Alta Alexander

In the past few days, the judges in South Carolina had given a ruling on the arbitrary killing of black over the last few months. It comes as a reprieve for many because this is a nation that has 47 percent of the population being the African American. These senseless killings of unarmed African Americans bring to the fore memories of the struggle against racism that the Americans paid with blood years ago.

A white officer was charged with the murder of an unarmed black man, and this made the citizens feel that justice was in place. The officer, Michael T Slager in his defense stated that he committed the crime since he was afraid for his life. Nonetheless, the crime footage shows a completely different story. The footage shows that Mr. Slager drew the weapon and shot Mr. Scot while he was running and was twenty feet away.

The footage also reveals Mr. Slager handcuffing Mr. Scott then going to the point where the struggle began then picking something. The police officer then goes back to the position of the body and drops whatever he picked next to Mr. Scott. And it was not the only case of African Americans being killed; others include:

A teenager, Michael Brown was shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson. The scenario took place after another killing, where Eric Garner an unarmed man selling cigarettes, was choked by a policeman in the area of Staten Island.

The killing of Tamir Rice who had a pellet gun sparked nationwide protests because the twelve-year-old had no confrontation with the police. Why would things like these happen in this generation after a very spirited fight to destroy racism in the country?

The answer also came this week in Ferguson. The African American population in the suburb of St. Louis has been growing from twenty-five percent in the year 1990 to about sixty-seven percent in the year 2010. With all these demographic developments, the power structure has remained over the years unchanged. By the time Brown was shot everyone in the council from the mayor to council members was white with one exception of only one black.

No African American was servicing in any school board, and this unbalanced representation must be an indicator of the oppression the black people have been going through in the hands of the police department. Reports indicate that blacks got harsher penalties for the same crimes by the white people.

The ruling that was given was aimed at settling the record on the tendencies of racism. The heinous crimes have attracted lots of protests since August, and they shape municipal elections. Some of the candidates vying for these posts joined in the protests. It is, therefore, imperative to the residents of these regions to overhaul the politics of the region to prevent such things from happening again. Each group should be represented in councils so as to reduce instances of a given group being favoured.
