Intelligently Exploring The Meaning Of Salvation

By Michelle Sanders

You may have many questions about what being saved means. Some may ask, "What is the meaning of salvation?" Not all people think the same way, though there are similarities in all. All people believe that this involves the forgiveness of their sins. Not all believe the same way about how that happens, and the way to obtain it, however. Also, many believes it also involves other things than just forgiveness of sins.

All believe that being saved involves the forgiveness of any sins we have committed. However, there is more to it than that, some believe. We are delivered from evil as well, both temporal and eternal. We are also allowed to live a life of freedom. In addition, the saved person, it is believed, has protection by God from the dangers of this earth. To those who believe this, there is even greater comfort in being saved. However, not all hold to these beliefs.

A person can be delivered from evil within two areas. One is the temporal and the other is the eternal. Temporal deliverance just means it has a limited amount of time. The eternal means there is no beginning or end to the event. When we accept God, we are relieved from the angst and shame of knowing we are participating in evil things. We can feel relieved that we no longer are under that influence. We are also relieved from the evils if the world around us.

Something else one enjoys when saved, according to some beliefs, is the freedom from sin and its control. Man must daily fight sin, as that is his nature. Once he is saved, however, he no longer has to fight this great evil. It no longer rules his life nor has dominion over the man. The ability to fight sin is enhanced when one is saved. He has a power over sin that God gives him.

There is also the protection from earthly dangers we receive when we accept God's law. In the book of Psalms God promised to protect the Israelite nation from the sickness, famine, and calamities of the sinful world so long as they accepted Him. Many believe that the reason our country enjoys the freedom from natural disasters and pestilence overall is because we are a Christian nation.

There are detailed instructions in the Bible about how one becomes saved. There must be a belief in Jesus Christ and faith in Him and His teachings. This leads the person to obedience to Him as a display of that belief and faith. However, you do not earn you ability to be saved. You just have to obey His commands to show your obedience and belief in Him. That does not mean you are earning you ability to be saved. It is just that obedience is required. Putting you faith in Jesus and putting Him on in baptism is also taught in the Bible. All steps are required. You cannot skip a step or omit it and still receive salvation.

Some teach that once you are saved you will never loose it. That is not the case, according to others. Just as a drowning man who is rescued from the water can jump back in, a sinner who has been delivered can go back into their sin. The Bible says to continually work on your salvation, which means being faithful. It further says if we remain faithful until death, Jesus will give us a crown of life.

The hows and whys of being saved gets complicated, in reference to how one believes the Bible. However you believe, it is something to be desired to have a relationship with God. It would take a hardened person indeed to not want that.
