A Brief Guide To Transpersonal Coaching

By Allyson Burke

Everyone at some point has problems they need to deal with. This can be on a personal level or it can involve work and other problems. Often one aspect of your life can have a negative influence on the others. This is why you may wish to consider using transpersonal coaching to help make your life better.

The term transpersonal refers to looking at something that goes beyond the individual. The lessons taught to us in school, the friends we have around us and how we are brought up as children all potentially influence our lives. However it is important to note that this is not about assigning blame or excusing behavior. It is about being empathetic and looking at how you can turn a negative reaction into a positive one.

In order to understand this think about the last time you felt stressed. You may have been driving to work and someone hit the wing mirror of your car. The likelihood is this will be on your mind as you go to work and is likely to affect your concentration. If this results in a bad day at work then this will mean you will come home stressed.

You may then react to that stress by eating comfort food, smoking or drinking alcohol. This in turn negatively affects your physical health and results in discomfort that can add to that stress. The stress in turn then exacerbates the physical problems, resulting in a vicious cycle where each negative reaction results in another problem arising and the method of dealing with it only seems to create more problems.

In many respects the transpersonal approach is holistic. Health is another aspect that people may not necessarily be aware of. Stress is a known factor in aggravating allergies and increasing the risk of heart attacks, strokes and other serious conditions. Stress also means people go for coping mechanisms such as comfort eating and alcohol.

It can also go beyond inner issues. Conflict resolution is a key aspect as this can affect personal relationships as well as how people deal with problems in business. With this kind of coaching the coach looks at how a person debates with other people about issues, trying to look for healthier ways to resolve a conflict than through arguing or trying to reach compromises that ultimately do not benefit either party.

A coach can look at an individual and their goals. They can allow people to look more clearly at their approach to these goals and a more positive approach. This more positive approach can then feed into how they interact with friends, family and the wider community. Over time it means people recognize what makes them stressed and how their reaction can exacerbate that stress as well as introducing more positive coping mechanisms to deal with that stress.

You can find numerous transpersonal coaching services online. If possible meet with them in person to discuss their experience and to gauge how they interact with you. This will make it easier to find a coach that is compatible with you and will give you the best chance of reaching your goals.
