Arizona Public Divorce Records

By Ben Kingsley

Arizona is one of the few states in the country that does not allow its residents to access the vital records of other people. This simply means that the people of Arizona can only request for their personal documents including the Arizona Public divorce records.

There are several reasons why the residents of Arizona request for a copy of a divorce certificate. Dealing with transactions in the government would require a copy of such document. This is true when dealing with request related to finances of an individual or a couple such as updating beneficiaries and dependents. Whenever a divorcee plans to marry again, he/she will be asked to provide a copy of the said document to proceed with the marriage application. Genealogy research is also one of the reasons for requesting such documents in Arizona. The information that can be found on the document is necessary when updating the family tree. It is not as important compared to other types of document like birth certificates; later generations may face problems and issues if the separation of a couple is not updated in a timely manner.

As the name suggest, divorce certificates would contain information about the separation of a couple. One would be able to know the real names of the couple. The document would also show the place and the date when the couple got separation legally. Those are the only information that can be obtained from a public document. Further details are kept private and available only to the people involved.

Further details about the separation are kept confidential. This includes the reason why the couple filed for divorce. The name of the one who filed the petition is also kept away from public access. The information about the child custody as well as the agreement about the assets and properties of the couple also remains private. This was done to respect the privacy of the divorcees. It also helps avoid any scrutiny that the couple may get from the other parties.

Retrieval of a divorce certificate may not be very easy in Arizona since the office of the Vital Records Section does not release a copy of the document. Only the county clerk office where the divorce was filed can release a copy of the document. Procedures and guidelines are not the same for each county but it is important to be prepared by knowing the basic information of the record that is being requested. Fees would also depend on the county where the file is requested. Ideally, it takes only 2 hours to get a copy of the document but it can be different in some counties. Requesting for the document over the phone is also possible but it can take a maximum of 3 weeks before the document can be available.

Retrieval of Arizona divorce decrees and records is made easy with the help of the Internet. With the document being one of the most requested files of the state, the local government has implemented an online server where divorce records can be stored and retrieved electronically. It has also hastened and simplified the retrieval process. This helps those individuals who cannot go to the office personally.
