Once Upon A Time Only The Highest Nobility Could Use Rhinestone Crowns

By Susan Dawson

Rhinestone crowns have adorned the heads of Kings, Queens and Princesses throughout the ages. Known for their beauty and similarity to diamonds these crystals are sought after throughout the world. Princess Diana wore a stunning crown the day she married Prince Charles.

Watching a jeweler hold a gemstone in his hand, magnifying glass clasped over one eye examining the stone is very interesting. He can tell immediately whether it is a genuine diamond, how many carats it is and the best way to have it cut. Choosing your own diamond can be worth any extra money you may spend because you will know the true value of the stone.

Most little girls are brought up on fairy tales. The greatest fairy tale being of Princes and Princesses. Mother's, perhaps foolishly, raise daughters with the fairytale fantasy of finding their handsome Prince and wearing a beautiful crown of jewels some day. Not literally of course but these little girls do grow up expecting to find the man of their dreams and all that accompanies it.

Girls grow up hearing their Mother and friends speaking of diamonds and crystals, sapphires and gold. They will naturally be attracted to these sparkling jewels as they get older. Most women remember the fairy tales of their youth and stories about Princesses and Princes.

There is the old saying that "Diamonds are a girl's best friend" and one only has to see the excitement when a man proposes to his bride to be and places that diamond ring on her finger. For many woman the more diamonds there are, the greater they think his love is for her. Not every woman feels that way, there are many who are quite content with just one glittering stone in their ring.

Many lives have been lost in the fight to find gold and diamonds throughout the years. Men traveled hundreds of miles in dreadful conditions with ox wagons. Traveling over treacherous terrain with families for months at a time. Many of the children died on the journeys from diseases. Many a mother died during childbirth because there were very few medical supplies and they had to rely on the other women traveling with them to help.

Being able to see the whole process of a lump of rock being turned into a bar of pure gold is so interesting that it will amaze all who see it. The men who work down these mines have a hard life. It gets unbearably hot and stuffy. The noise from the jack hammers they use to penetrate the hard rocks are deafening.

Those that made it and found their fortunes were few and far between. The men worked so hard at digging for diamonds and gold but many were foolish when they found enough, to go back to town and cash in their find for money. Instead of going back to their families and handing over the money, they went into town and drank, gambled and spent it on prostitutes who were all too willing to take that hard earned cash. Rhinestone crowns, diamonds and all that glitters have brought joy and sorrow to many.
