Support Food For The Poor In Haiti

By Lessie Kaufman

It seems unlikely that the poorest country on earth should be in the western hemisphere, but this is the case. Food For The Poor in Haiti is trying to change this statistic. Other humanitarian organizations also are trying to help this island nation overcome the problems that have kept its people in poverty generation after generation.

Food For The Poor is an international organization that serves Latin America and the Caribbean. It is one of the largest charitable organizations in the world. It depends on donation primarily but also receives government grants to assist in its efforts. The aid is delivered in many different ways, although food is one of the major needs that must be addressed immediately and continually.

Haiti is the only nation founded by a successful slave revolt. It's population is descended almost entirely from slaves and their colonial masters; the upper class is mulatto while the lower, major people group is black. Discovered by Columbus, the island soon was wrested from its native population and turned into sugar plantations. African slaves were imported and subjected to brutal conditions while European countries grew wealthier.

Unfortunately, early promise of freedom and hope were destroyed as coup after political coup shook the new country and dictators assumed power and plundered the nation. Corruption has kept the people without opportunity to improve their lives. The mountainous character of the country concentrates most of the population in the cities and the limited river valley and coastal plain regions. Generation after generation suffers in a cycle of extreme poverty.

Food For the Poor maintains a center in Port-au-Prince that feeds over fifteen thousand people a day. It also establishes water distribution and chlorination facilities, as well as sanitation, for many communities. It offers help in starting micro-enterprises to help people make a meager living - which raises them above the average - and builds houses for families with no shelter. They maintain medical clinics, hospitals, and orphanages. They build and restore schools.

The organization works with many children whose families can't afford to feed them, much less pay the costs of school supplies and uniforms. This is a highly-rated charity with a long track record of wisely using donated money to the best advantage for poverty-stricken nations. They direct more than ninety-five percent of all funds received directly to humanitarian programs, spending less than five percent on administrative costs and fundraising efforts.

People can help this effort in several ways. A one-time donation can be given online by check, credit card, or third-party payment (e. G. Paypal and Amazon). Automatic monthly donations can be also be set up. People can build a webpage to raise money and awareness locally. Many choose to sponsor an individual child, providing life support and education for under forty dollars a month. This helps not only the child and its family, but the entire community as well.

More information is available online. Upcoming events include 5K runs that inform the public as well as raise money for emergency needs. The charity posts pictures of children needing sponsors, too, and provides information on what the organization is doing in Haiti and other areas of Latin America and the Caribbean.
