The Reason For Youth Unemployment In South Africa

By Nancy Gardner

Finding a job can be stressful when you are young and don't know where to start. Youth unemployment in South Africa is an example of some of the tension that young people face today. There are a lot of issues that one has to deal with, such as the lack of experience and the competition for jobs.

Even if you have a good qualification, it may not mean much, because you can't prove yourself. There are many people that leave top universities every year looking for jobs and there are not enough opportunities around that are able to provide employment. This leaves youth with big problems on their hands.

For young people who do finish school and go on to graduate at a college or university, they also find it tough in the real world. There is a lot of competition for jobs. Those who have just graduated find themselves applying for positions that many people are competing for. The first choice will be a more mature student or someone who has experience.

A lot of the youth have started to head overseas in search of positions which pay well and where they are able to find a job easily. However, not everyone is able to do this. It is only those with wealthy parents that are able to send their kids overseas. A lot of young people in South Africa come from backgrounds where there are no finances available and this poses more of a problem.

Young people who have money flock to other parts of the world and find that there are more jobs available in the field that they are in. There are many openings in places like Dubai and even Europe. In some areas, the cost of living is affordable. Once you have stuck it out for a couple of months, the cash will start to build up.

Some parents are struggling financially themselves and can't afford to send their kids to university in order to further their education. This leaves them with a problem on their hands. They can't apply for certain jobs because of the requirements. Some of them will drop out of school at an early age because they become demotivated and rebellious. This is where things become bad.

More and more people are encouraging people to start their own business in South Africa. However, when you are still young, this is not easy and mistakes can be made. One needs to learn from someone else or by joining with an older partner who will show him or her ropes. Some youths lack ambition and motivation and need to be coached by a mentor, so that they are able to go forward in life.

On a positive note, there are a lot of organizations that have started up which encourage young people to start a business. They will also provide a start up investment should they think the business is going to be profitable and grow into something big in the future. A young person should have a business coach or mentor in a situation like this, since he or she is new to entrepreneurship.
