Choosing An Elvis Tribute For Your Event

By Essie Osborn

John Lennon famously once said that before Elvis there was nothing. He is one of the most influential figures in the genre of rock and roll and indeed the pop music culture in general. His premature and tragic death has added to the mystique and performers that can do an Elvis tribute are very much sought after.

Before choosing an impersonator you need to think about what your event is. You may love Elvis but if it is not appropriate you should not have a tribute act for the event. It depends on whether the event is formal or casual. An act you would choose for a wedding would probably different for something for a county fair.

For example with an older audience they are more likely to want the earlier Elvis who performed at Sun Records and before he went to the army. These tend to be the more rock and roll style and are a bit rougher and edgier than the later Colonel Parker era records.

This is what you need to consider when choosing an impersonator. Some people may go for a wide range of songs from his whole career. Others may choose to focus on the pre GI era or the later period when he was managed by Colonel Tom Parker, arguably making Elvis the first pop creation that would go on to influence everyone from The Beatles to One Direction.

It should also be noted that some entertainers have other skills. They may be able to pour cocktails and serve drinks. Others may be able to perform magic or make balloon animals for children. They can often provide a little bit of extra added value and some unexpected additional entertainment.

While a lot of people love someone doing a show on stage more people want a full experience. Increasingly people want interactive entertainment for their event. For example some performers go to weddings and do other forms of entertainment as well as singing such as acting in character while serving drinks or doing balloon animals for the kids.

This is why it is important to meet impersonators in person. While videos can show them at their best you need to talk to them. Explain to them what you want for the event and see if they have the kind of skills and experience you want. They should be willing to answer any questions and go into detail about what they can do for you and how they can tailor their performance to your needs.

It is also important to ask the right questions in terms of their experience. Ideally you want someone who is a recognised tribute act or someone with years of experience who can demonstrate that they have had a number of successful events. It is also worth looking online to get feedback from people who have used the services of impersonators and tribute acts in the past to find the ideal one for your event.
