The Big Picture Of American Political Commentary

By Essie Osborn

The US is very instrumental through the way it impacts political decisions the world over. Its aim as a super power is to ensure that peace and tranquility prevails in all political situations. It is thus quite unfortunate for some nations to fault such positive interventions. In a shoddy american political commentary, they are always quick to cry foul that others are meddling in their private affairs. It is however a good gesture for the United States to stay put and for it to continue giving directions where necessary.

A case in point is early this year when the US intervened on Russian invasion of Ukrainian territory. President Obama, through a ninety minutes call discussed the issue with the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin. He told Putin that Russia risked political isolation if their soldiers that had been deployed to Ukrainian territories were not removed. According to president Obama, this was a gross violation of territorial regulations. Putin on the other hand felt that Obama was being inconsiderate.

The argument was that Russia should remove their forces from Ukrainian territory. To strengthen the point further, a statement from the white house indicated that refusal of Ukraine to oblige would result to America withdrawing their participation from the group of eight summit in Sochi, Russia, which is to take place in June. Greater political and economic isolation of Russia was also to be part of the action.

This is just one example where the United States has intervened to safeguard international justice. Their wings have spread even into Africa where a country like Uganda risked political sanctions for infringing on gay rights. They argued that gay relationships were non African and being a Western affair, its practice should be limited to the West.

When he visited Africa recently, Obama surpassed Kenya which is believed to be his motherland. His reaction to this when interviewed later was that the corruption level in that country was so high that any economic assistance would be a futile move. In the light of this isolation, the Kenyan administration resolved to deal decisively with impunity and corruption.

The United States itself is a non member of the Rome Statute. Nevertheless, she has been at the forefront in assisting and supporting The Hague international criminal court to rightly exercise its mandate. Together with other members of the international community, they have shown respect to international law and have dealt decisively with rebellious cases. As a result, crimes against humanity such as massacre and massive rape have significantly reduced on the large scale.

Even though it has done most things right, there are some instances when The US really rubs others the wrong way. They normally seem to give no room for negotiations. It is either their way or never. This results into rebellion and outcry from the affected countries. The situation can become better is they accepted to be wrong at some point and allow solutions from other quarters.

America is thus at crossroads when it comes to management of world politics. Whereas their participation is always expected, when they do, someone has to come out and point an accusing finger at them. They therefore need to accept to take actions even amidst displeasure from other parties.
