The type of gowns that brides wear during a wedding ceremony are referred to as wedding dresses or gowns. Several aspects of the gowns such as ceremonial importance, color, and style are usually dependent on factors such as the culture, religion, and wealth status of the bridegroom and the bride. Weddings are usually a dream every girl has and when the time comes, they research enormously to ensure that they get the perfect dress. During the nineteenth century, Queen Victoria made white dresses very popular in western cultures and they are still popular to this day. On the other hand, the red color is preferred more in Eastern cultures because it is taken to mean auspiciousness. In the Middle Ages, weddings were taken to be more political than they were affectionate. One usually signified the union of two businesses, families, or countries, especially among the nobility.

Brides were required to look favorable to the audience because they not only represented themselves, but the entire family and their political standing. Rich colors and exclusive fabrics were worn mostly. In those days, how expensive the gown was usually symbolized the social standing of the bride and how rich the family was.

Production of gowns usually happens in masses or individually for specific clients. The wealthy and celebrities usually settle for customized products as a show of status or personal preference.

Making of gowns does not have any specific academic courses. An alternative that most people go for is associate or bachelor degree in fashion design. Students take classes in sales skills, bridal design, sewing techniques, and marketing among others. Internships and competitions are also available to students. In the US, annual fashion shows are also available.

Certain skills are required in order to become an expert in bridal gowns. One must have some ability in drawing and sewing. It is also important to possess some knowledge in computer aided design software and graphic design software for creation of gown patterns before they are produced. Communication skills are important for communicating and interacting with customers.
