By Ben Kingsley

North Carolina is an open state. An open state would mean that the residents of a certain state have the freedom to obtain a copy of their personal document whenever they need it. Divorce records in North Carolina is only one of the many documents that the residents of North Carolina can access.

When a couple decides to separate because of irresolvable conflict, an official document has to be generated to make it legal. After the divorce, the couple needs to update their status in the government and one of the documents that have to be presented is the divorce certificate. Without it, transactions related to the separation of the couple may not be processed. Such document is also needed if one of the divorcees would apply for remarriage. This is also one of the documents being checked when conducting a background check on the marital status of an individual. This is conducted by people who wish to make sure that the one's they are dating is unattached or legally separated.

As the name suggest, a divorce certificate would show details about the separation of a married couple. Details such as when and where the separation was made legal are indicated on the file. One would also find information about the marriage of the couple such as when and where they got married. Unfortunately, not all details of the separation can be found on a public divorce file. One would not find information about the custody of the children as well as the division of the properties and assets of the couple. The reason for the separation is also kept confidential. This was done to respect the privacy of the couple.

North Carolina releases a copy of the divorce certificate if it occurred from 1958. A $24 processing fee has to be paid in order to get a copy of such document from the state. It is important that the one who requested for the document knows the basic details of the file being requested since it will be used during the retrieval process. Also, the state would only grant the request if it was made by the either one of the divorcees and their immediate family.

The public records of North Carolina are archived at the Vital Records Section of the state. One can go to the office to file the request for a copy of a divorce certificate. If the requested file is not available at the state office, it may be available at the county clerk office where the separation was filed and registered. A mail request can also be sent to the state office but this is not the fastest method to obtain the document since it may take days to get it.

Doing a California divorce records search online can help hasten the retrieval process. One just needs to log on to a website that offers to obtain the information for you. The search online can be done for free or for a certain fee. Many would go for the paid search to ensure that they get quality information.
