The Importance Of Anti Hate Groups

By Lena Stephenson

A lack of understanding about the differences between people often leads to fear and intolerance. Those who are living in fear often gravitate towards others with the same fears. There is a myth that ignoring these groups of people is the best policy. In fact, when left unaddressed, these sentiments tend to grow and often lead to acts of intimidation and end up in hate-related violence. Many anti hate groups have arisen to stand up against this.

They may be a small group devoted to protecting the rights of a specific minority or a larger one that fights against racism of any kind. Recently, an issue for concern is the proliferation of intolerance on the web and certain organizations are devoted to looking out for web bigotry. Large or small, they are addressing important issues and deserve support.

Some of the organizations active in the United States or white nationalists and black separatists as well as the Aryans and the Klansman. People may feel that these organizations should be simply ignored. However, ignoring them does not make them go away. The fact is that many young people are attracted to join and this cannot be ignored. This is why so many people feel that the youth need more education in this area.

These organizations are often very active and will use every chance to intimidate, spread propaganda, destroy property and worse. An alarming fact is that many perpetrators and victims of hate-related crimes are young people. This is why many people concerned in dealing with hate-related crimes have a focus on educating the youth.

There is a realization that issues such as diversity, prejudice and racism have to be discussed. This has to begin as early as possible. Parents need to start talking about these issues with their children. Educators need to address them in school too. In talking about the differences between races, religions, sexes and more, it is possible to bring about change. Hopefully, these young people who are able to recognize discrimination from an early age will no longer tolerate it.

Many organizations offer help to parents and educators in this task in the form of books, documentary films, videos and much more. These are usually distributed freely as such groups are often supported by donations. Programs can be followed that help to explore diversity and break down stereotypes. Children are lead towards understanding their own biases and how to move beyond them, thus creating a climate in schools where everyone feels accepted and secure.

Various means are used by different organizations to fight against injustice, hatred and bigotry. Apart from efforts to address the education of young people, legal actions are also taken on behalf of victims such as prison inmates who have been abused or exploited workers. Some even offer material to help in educating law enforcement officials on how to prevent and intervene in hate-related incidents s they are usually the first line of response.

When a country is going through turmoil and economic difficulties, violent crimes committed out of hatred often increase. Everybody is looking for someone else to blame for their troubles and this is also exploited by the media and politicians. It is wrong to just ignore such issues and people need to make a stand against them.
