Foundations For Youth Unemployment In South Africa

By Elaine Guthrie

Youth joblessness reflects the problems that these young people go through in life. The situation needs addressing as the lack of job is leading to problems such as crime. The faster the issues are addressed, the better the country will be. The factors below are the ones contributing to youth unemployment in South Africa.

The number one cause of unemployment is the education system. This system has led to increase in unskilled labor. The education system in the country is very low. The economy is growing faster and there is no enough training to match the rate at which these industries that need skilled labor are increasing.

The other contributing factor is the learning system. The system does not equip the kids with the knowledge they need to succeed in life. They are taught subjects that will not help them or better yet, they will not require them in a career path they take. The system should be designed in such a way that it does equip people with relevant life skills.

The other significant cause of poverty in South Africa is high poverty levels. Many youths have completed their studies but there is no job that is forth coming. After tarmacking for long, they give up, as they have no money to cater for rent, fare and other necessities. They start looking for any kind of job. What happen when they do this are they becoming rusty in the skills they were taught in school. Therefore, even if they got a job later, they will not perform as expected. You will find that most youth find employment when they are almost thirty years of age. Poverty has also made students drop out of school due to lack of school fees. This is common in large families.

The country has a vibrant mining sector and several under developed sectors. The reason for underdevelopment is due to lack of skilled workers to work in an industry. For example, the agricultural industry is a major employer. If people had the right mindset and training, they would work in this sector. However, since there are only a few, the many offer less quality of work than expected.

Social cultural issues such as drug abuse and prostitution are also to blame. In South Africa drug abuse and prostitution is rampant. The reason for this is that the older generation lacked jobs and engaged in the said vices to earn money. Therefore, the young people indulge in particular vices since everyone is doing it due to lack of jobs.

The economic situation in this country has led to joblessness among the young people. These economic factors include high inflation, taxes, and low wages. High inflation causes the goods and services to be expensive. The cost of commodities goes up and there is no significant increase in wage to offset the increase in prices. Investor will not set up industries in this country if the inflation rate and other factors are not addressed.

Youth unemployment is real and judging by the rate at which it is growing, the government needs to do something about it. Failure to address the situation will lead to crime. The government should increase the training opportunities available.
