Principles To Follow When Dating Muslims

By Ann Turner

Islam has a very elaborate guide on courtship and marriage. Dating Muslims are required to follow the guide, whether they met online or in the real world. There is punishment if you fail to observe these rules. Beyond being punished by the community, you will face the wrath of Allah, one whose punishment is severe.

Islam recognizes that people fall in love. In fact, religious teachings encourage people to love each other and also extend the love to all creations. The principles used during courtship are designed to protect the persons involved from hurt and the society from broken or dysfunctional marriages. This is why the Quran remains the central point of focus in every facet of the relationship, engagement, premarital sex and marriage.

There is no restriction on where people can meet and how they fall in love. The traditional society involved people living together. They were introduced by relatives and parents after thorough evaluation of their history. They could be monitored and their behaviors were known. This made courtship easy and was certain to lead to marriage.

As people disperse and people desire to make personal decisions on marriage, online dating takes root. It is embraced because people no longer live in exclusive societies. It also gives people an opportunity meet partners from other countries or cities. This is not a reason to break any of the courtship rules. Meetings that have their genesis on the internet must also remain within the principles set in the Quran.

Persons who are interested in each other or even engaged cannot be in the same room or private space alone. The idea is to keep them from sexual temptations. When chatting with a potential mate online, you should be worried if he or she suggests that you go private. This is likely to compromise your integrity and expose you to hurt.

Traditional societies have chaperons to watch over courting couples. Today, this might not be possible. Dating sites for Muslims organize group activities involving friends, families and age mates, among others. Since the activities are held outdoor, you have a chance to interact in dignity. Kissing is not even allowed until you are married. Any compromising activities will cause your engagement to be broken or disapproved.

Halal dating is the new version that is approved by clerics around the world. You are allowed to keep in contact with your target partner through the phone or via the internet. Even introduction by parents and relatives is allowed. Once you feel compatible and decide to spend your life together, you will sign a nikah, a contract that is just as binding as the marriage certificate.

Dating in Islam must not be mistaken for lack of personal will or emotions. You have an opportunity to love a Muslim whether you follow the Islam religion or not. With Halal dating, you have time and the space to develop an understanding and later commit to marrying each other to live happily ever after.
